Happy Dollars

Mike Stoiber spent New Years with friends and went to a rodeo.  Is happy he did not play cowboy poker.  It sounded like quite an experience!

Dr. Barbara Wilson is happy her husband has retired and will be able to help run the home.

Waye Metz said he saw a wonderful program on Saturday morning on Channel 36 highlighting projects by Niles Canyon Rotary.  Caryn Wegerbauer said Herb Borchers sent an email which stated that the Niles club is looking for projects from other clubs to highlight on the program.

Marlin Bryant announced that it was his birthday, but that he was not donating $58, but would contribute $8.  Thanks Marlin and Happy Birthday!

Announcements

Julie Mason said she sent out a new roster to everyone.  If there are any changes, please email her.

Julie also asked if everyone was receiving the Rotarian magazine.  If not, please let her know.

Mike Stoiber reminded everyone about the concert on Saturday, February 9, at the Creative Arts Building in Pittsburg featuring the Marcus Shelby Jazz Band.  Dr. Wilson said that this a wonderful cooperative effort between the City of Pittsburg which donated $2,500 and PUSD.  It is a literacy kick-off and every student who reads Harriet Tubman gets a free ticket to the concert.

Spanish-English dictionaries will be at the club at 11:00 am, January 22 for those Rotarians who can come early to help affix labels and insert letters.  There will only be 100 to do.  The volunteer sheet will be emailed listing the team leader, teams and contact/location for presentation.

You can check out the website at http://www.pittsburgrotary.org/Rotary/calendar.htm to see what is going on and when.

The Pittsburg Chamber Annual Installation Dinner will be held on Thursday, January 31, 6:00 pm at the Pittsburg Elks Lodge, 200 Marina Blvd., Pittsburg.  Our own Mike Stoiber is the "Business Person of the Year".  Congratulations Mike!  Let's get a very large group together to honor and support Mike at the dinner.  So far we have going:

Diana Mason

Van DePiero (paid Chamber)
Linda Bewer (paid Chamber
Stan Davis

We also have two maybe:  Wayne Metz and guest of Renee.  Please let Diana know by Tuesday, January 15, if you plan to attend and want to be included in the Rotary group.  Rotary will issue one check to pay for us and we pay Rotary (except Van and Linda who have already paid the Chamber).  If you do not confirm with Diana, you will not be at the Rotary table.

January 29th is the date for the Annual Rotary Club Auction with Auctioneer Mike.  If you are able to attend, please bring an item worth a minimum of $25 or if you are unable to attend you will be billed $25 unless you have someone bring an item for you.

February 12th is the date for the annual Valentine's Day luncheon at Stoneman Village Senior Housing at the corner of Leland and Harbor.  Parking is available across the street at the Pittsburg Senior Center on Presidio Lane.  Please arrive early to help serve at 11:30 am.  The event is catered and paid for by Rotary.

Program

Super Rotarian Mike Stoiber gave a fabulous presentation on his three-week trip to Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia.  His photos were beautiful and included wonderful captions.  Maybe Mike can be a photo journalist in his next life!

Some facts Mike stated:

Hippos kill more people than any other animal

Sounds of the animals are amazing

Princess Barbara had a wonderful time in spite of camping

Hwange National Park was in most of the photos

Saw total eclipse of sun on June 21, 2001 at 2:30 PM

Wonderful photo of moon passing over sun

Capetown, South Africa similar to San Francisco

Both have islands that are prisons

Nelson Mandela was imprisioned in island prison in Capetown

Dutch control most of the tobacco plantations

Fabulous presentation.  Thanks Mike.  You always do a great job.

Future Programs
Tuesday, January 15 - Jackie from PG&E on energy savings.
Tuesday, January 22 - Rhonda from DMV on new laws going into effect.

Greeter for Next Week
It's a mystery because Diana did not write it down.  It just might be Renee.
