Announcements

Mike announced that lunch next week will be served in the Sports Bar which is in the building behind the banquet room at Wedgewood.

Mike also announced that Tuesday, February 12, has been set as the Valentine's Day luncheon at Stoneman Village Senior Housing at the corner of Leland and Harbor.  The lunch will be catered and Rotarians will serve the seniors and then eat themselves.

Mike also announced that the Nutcracker will be performed in Pittsburg, December 8-9, at the Pittsburg Creative Arts Building by the Peninsula Ballet Theatre, a professional company.  The Pittsburg Creative Arts Building Corporation is asking for help from Rotary by donating either $100 or $200 to purchase tickets for disadvantaged students.  Another alternative is purchasing discount pricing for a group of 12 or more including dinner ($45 each) The board must vote on this decision.

Induction

Dr. Barbara Wilson, new Superintendent of Schools for the Pittsburg Unified School District, has spent her entire career in education and came to Pittsburg in July from the Jefferson School District in Daly City.  She is thrilled to be here and sees a lot of optimism in the community.  Many changes are underway with a new elementary and middle school opening in August 2007 and a new high school in the works.  The current high school will be torn down and a new one built with the main entrance on Harbor.  It will then become a closed campus.  She received her Ph.D. at Berkeley, loves to travel, has visited numerous countries, has a vacation/retirement home in Lake Chapala, Mexico, and has three children.  Her daughter was recently married in Napa, son graduated from UC Berkeley and another son at UC Davis.

Richard Tomlinson, CPA, has resided in East County for 19 years, has been married for 12 years, and has two daughters, 9 and 8.  He is a first generation American with family ties in Jamaica.  He loves the Pittsburg area and is very excited about all of the new development downtown.  He likes the service aspect of Rotary and serves on the School Site Committee at Foothill Elementary.  He loves to travel and read and says that he has an agreement with his wife.  She does not say anything about his book collection and he does not say anything about the number of shoes in her closet.

Please give a warm welcome two our two new great members!

Speaker

The speaker was Josy Miller, Artistic Director for the Hapgood Theatre Company in Antioch.  The company is named for Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood, an extraordinary theatre scholar of the early 20th century, who was responsible for exposing the U.S. to the Method, the realist acting technique that has become the foundation of our American Theatre.  The 2007-2008 is the Debut Season with four plays at the Nick Rodriguez Theater, a beautiful, newly renovated space holding an intimate 200 seats.  The four plays are:  A Moon for the Misbegotten, Rumors, How I learned To Drive, and Lovely Day.  Additional information can be obtained at:  www.hapgoodtheatre.org
